Welcome to new bishop

The clergy and laity of the diocese of Chichester will wish to join the Rt Rev Mark Sowerby in welcoming our new bishop, Dr Martin Warner.

The eagerness which he has expressed to learn more about the mission in which we shall be engaging together will be an inspiration to every parish to join in our diocesan mission to share the good news of the Gospel with all the people of Sussex by effective implementation of a constantly monitored mission action plan within our local communities.

In the words of the Rev Alastair Cutting, chair of the House of Clergy in the diocese: “Bishop Martin is a gifted communicator with dynamism and personality, and a keen supporter of mission and community engagement. He brings a deep commitment to the breadth of the C of E, drawing together a wide spectrum of theological views and positions, helped by his ministry as a canon of St Paul’s Cathedral in London from 2003 to 2012.”

As the author of five books he has demonstrated his enthusiasm for sharing the Christian faith with others, and as Brian Hanson, CBE, chair of the House of Laity in the diocese has said, ‘comes with a reputation as a fine preacher and teacher of the faith’.

Although a traditionalist, he worked closely with women priest colleagues at St Paul’s Cathedral, and while the Suffragan Bishop of Whitby in the north of England from 2010 sought to serve with equal care the ordained men and women in his episcopal care.
