Would you pay to enter a shop?

I have two observations of Hastings for the weekend just passed.
The drinking venue in Trinity Street with the large sign advertising the “Independents (sic) Day” celebrations on July 8.
The boot sale on the pier charging £5 to enter. Surely somebody was having a laugh? Would you go in a shop if they charged a £5 entry fee?
