Opposition mounts against Chichester Tesco student accommodation bid

Opposition is growing against a three to five storey student accommodation block planned for land close to Chichester Tesco.

A couple who live on Fishbourne Road East, where the 153 student beds could be built, are urging people to oppose the plans, and already close to ten official objections have been lodged.

The recently submitted planning application seeks to erect the fully managed student accommodation block on land adjacent to Tesco petrol station, Fishbourne Road East.

Peter and Ann Greenwood are handing out a list of their objections to fellow neighbouring residents, and urging others to submit their own objections to Chichester District Council, the planning authority.

Mr and Mrs Greenwood feel a building of up to five storeys is ‘too high’ and will be ‘too bulky for the size of the site’, while also saying that ‘153 students is too many’ and will be ‘detrimental to the amenity of existing residents’.

A number of others agree and have lodged official objection letters.

Tim Meyer’s letter said: “I STRONGLY OBJECT TO THIS PLANNING THE PROPOSED BUILDING IS TO HIGH AND WILL NOT FIT IN THE SURROUNDING.”

Trudie Munday added: “What are the planner’s thinking? We already have Westwood House which results in the police attending there at least once a week.

“This will further cause problems. Why don’t the Uni build on some of the Graylingwell land.

“We have issues with parking down Fishbourne Road East with Tesco people who don’t want to park in Tesco’s carpark and also the traffic that comes through Clay Lane.

“The building itself look terrible and not in keeping with the area, why next to the petrol station and why duel access with it.

“There’s no way that no cars can be enforced unless there is 24 hr patrols.”

The application is set to be considered by Chichester City Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, February 9.
