Owl visit to Petworth care home

“I’ve never seen owls like it,” said Anthony Puttock, one of the activities coordinators at Barlavington Manor,

After looking online for some out-of-the-ordinary visitors, he came across Owls About Town, based in East Preston, near Littlehampton.

“Everyone’s stroked a dog, but not everyone’s held a barn owl,” he said.

“To get them in and be able to handle them was amazing.

“They were all so friendly and ever since they came in the residents have been raving about them.”

The visit took place last Thursday morning (January 17) and the owl handlers spoke to residents about the owls, including their stories and facts about them.

The visitors included an eagle owl, a little owl and two five-month-old barn owls.

Speaking of the owl handlers, Anthony added: “They were absolutely informative, but the best thing was seeing the faces of the residents.”

He added members of staff at the home had received numerous requests from residents for animals to be brought in for a visit.

Anthony, who is also a professional wedding photographer, took several pictures on the day, and now many relatives of residents have requested copies.

Owls about Town was founded to educate and inform both children and adults about birds.

By offering instructional visits to schools, groups and individuals, they aim to increase the awareness and encourage their conservation.
