6-year-old takes on 100-mile walk in memory of grandmother to raise money for Dementia Support

Freyja Greig’s grandmother, Ann Key, passed away in October with dementia, which inspired the six-year-old to raise money for Tangmere charity Dementia Support

The Oakwood School pupil, who lives in Slindon Common with her parents, Colin and Nadine Greig, started her 30-day challenge on February 13 with a 6.5-mile countryside walk to Slindon Folly with her dog, Bonnie.

Colin said: “Nadine and I are extremely proud of how mature she is on this subject and how determined she is to reach each little milestone every day.

“She is now at 76 miles with a hope to complete the 100 miles by the end of the weekend.”

Freyja’s initial fundraising target was £500 and she is now just short of her revised £800 target.

Colin said: “Although Freyja is only six, she is aware of what dementia can do to people and families around and is aware of the help that Dementia Support can do for others.”

A spokesman for Dementia Support said: “We are delighted that Freyja has chosen Dementia Support to benefit from her amazing fundraising challenge in memory of her grandmother.

“As a local charity, we are always so grateful to people locally, like Freyja, for supporting the work that we do and ensuring we continue to provide support to anyone affected by dementia.

“Freyja is an inspiration to us all and we wish her the best of luck in completing her 100 miles challenge!”

This is not the first time the year-one pupil has decided to take on a fundraiser – last year she helped make 3D-printed superhero NHS keyrings and raised nearly £1,000 for the NHS.
