Chichester Police explains 'strange' sighting in the sky

Chichester Police has explained why some people may have seen a mysterious object in the sky this week.

The city's police force said officers have been using drones to find missing people.

In a post on Twitter on Tuesday evening (March 23), a spokesperson said: "If you've seen something strange in the sky it was probably us.

"Two drone deployments over two days and each time we've found the missing person in the city of Chichester."

What are drones/UAVs?

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is an aircraft without a pilot on board. They are most often referred to as drones and take off and land vertically, like helicopters.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: "We currently operate a number of different drones models in Surrey and Sussex.

"We are using drones to; assist with searches for missing persons; assist with investigations into road traffic collisions, major crime and industrial accident investigation; assist with event planning and management and provide situational awareness to officers and commanders in a variety of policing situations.

"Our drones are only deployed for specific operational tasks and are not used for general patrol/surveillance. They are not patrolling the skies above Surrey and Sussex on a daily basis."
