She said she was ‘deeply saddened’ to hear of Dame Vera’s death earlier today.

“Dame Vera had a warm and genuine personality and a real love for people,” she said.

“This, along with her unique gifts as a musician and entertainer has made her an inspiration for our nation throughout many decades.

“Dame Vera’s concern for others has driven her extraordinary charitable work and in particular led her to establish the Dame Vera Lynn Charity, that has made life so much easier for many families with children suffering from cerebral palsy.

“Dame Vera cared very deeply about the work of charity and until recently was a frequent and enthusiastic visitor, supporting and encouraging the staff and the families.

“She was dearly loved and will be missed by many people.”
