The path leading to the Shimmings Valley in Petworth was closed due to health and safety concerns when a wall became unstable.

The path is still unusable, residents say, and has been for ‘well over a year’.

One resident, Mrs J Slimmon, said: “Access has been prohibited for well over a year and no attempt is being made to repair the unsafe wall.

“The situation is unacceptable for residents.”

Richard Carline said: “The closure had been poorly signed and barricaded at each end.

“This was constantly knocked down and the path used by irate ‘regulars’.

“The assumption then was that the path could be closed for a couple of months or so whilst works were carried out.

“Although inconvenient, this was acceptable and few questions were asked, but word got out that the wall to the west of the path was unsafe and needed underpinning.

“The current solid barricade and signage has been up for a long time. The exact date of closure is now dim and distant.”

Georgie Gaines said: “I used to use the path daily to walk my dog with my children and it has been so sad not being able to access it and also knowing how many people would use it.

“Also just to sit on the benches which are there to admire the beautiful view.”

A spokesman for Petworth Town Council said: “The town council are very aware that the community are very keen for this popular footpath to reopen but we are also aware of the complexity of the rebuilding of the wall.

“Hopefully the work will be able to start and once again the residents of Petworth can enjoy this popular and beautiful path.”
