Broadcaster John Inverdale, a sports presenter on TV and radio, welcomed the members of 1066 Chapter Harley-Davidson Owners Club to Worthing Ambulance Station on Good Friday.

Around 400 Easter eggs were delivered as a thank you to frontline ambulance staff and these will be shared out across the area.

Clive Johnson, events officer, said: “As we all know, the past 12 months have been difficult times for everyone, with Covid-19 affecting people’s lives in many different ways, and with the daily government news updates on infection numbers, along with deaths, it’s been harrowing times and very distressing for those who have lost loved ones.

“We all know that all NHS hospital staff and doctors have done a fantastic job dealing with this pandemic and we have all been showing our appreciation to them from clapping on Thursday evenings to putting signs outside our homes and in our windows.

“At some point in all of our lives, each and every one of us have had to call for an ambulance, either for ourselves, a member of our family, a friend, or a complete stranger, but we know very soon after making that call in our hour of need an ambulance vehicle with its trained members of staff will be there to help. Even during this pandemic, when we were told to stay at home and keep safe, the ambulance crew along with many other frontline workers continued to support the nation.”

The club has supported many charities over the years and each year, members choose a nominated charity. This year, the 1066 Chapter is supporting CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), a movement against suicide which tackles men’s mental health.

Over the coming year, members will be raising money in different ways, and to run alongside that, Karen Johnson, Clive’s wife and an events team member, suggested collecting Easter eggs for the local ambulance service.

Clive explained: “We kindly asked our members in our weekly newsletter if when they were doing their weekly food shopping, they would buy and donate an Easter egg for the ambulance service.

“In true 1066 Chapter generosity, we collected hundreds of chocolate Easter eggs, which were received by Mr Ryan Bird from Worthing Ambulance Station, who will in turn arrange the delivery of the Easter eggs to the many other local ambulance stations.”

Mr Inverdale said a few words of thanks to the staff for their heroic work they have achieved over the past 12 months.

He said: “As we all know, all the emergency services have done an incredible job over the last 12 months, even more so than normal, and I hope they have an ‘eggs-cellent’ and ‘eggs-citing’ Easter as a consequence of all this.”

The 1066 Chapter has more than 500 members who support events across Sussex and can arrange birthday rides on the back of a Harley-Davidson in exchange for a donation to the charity of the year. The club is supported by Lewes dealership Sykes Harley-Davidson and anyone who would like to contact the club to arrange a visit should call them on 01825 872003.
