Following the cancellation of its popular, annual carnival procession, the town council wants to run coronavirus-safe events to ‘bring the community together’.

Events officer Kayleigh Collyer said: “We have been trying to come up with ideas for events that people could join in with at home, or by social distancing.

“We thought about running a competition, with the winner receiving vouchers to spend at shops in Midhurst to keep it local and give back to our community.

People that are at home shielding, can download the maps and see photos on our social media. They can log on to see what scarecrows people have made and feel included.

“It will be beautiful if a lot of people take part.

“We are very excited about it and it’s great to be able to do something after so many events have been cancelled.”

This will be the first scarecrow competition held in the town.

“It’s a first,” Kayleigh added. “No one really expected it.

“Hopefully as many people take part as possible.”

Participants can register their scarecrow now before collecting their crosses, from the council, from July 13.

Entries must be submitted before July 31, and scarecrows displayed in your front garden or window between August 1 and 28. The viewing and judging period takes place the week beginning August 21.
