Kill the Bill protest to go ahead in Chichester tomorrow

The peaceful protest is to show opposition to a proposed government bill, the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which would restrict the right to protest, critics say.

One of the event's organisers, Phil Wilson, chair of the Chichester District Trades Council, said: "The plan is for people to assemble in Priory Park from midday then we will march from Priory Park down the city centre via North Street and to the Market Cross where there will be a number of speeches and live acts hopefully.

"There are many good things about the bill, however, the government do have a tendency of trying to mask quite dangerous proposals in amongst good ideas.

"One issue is the additional powers that the police would have to limit and control protesters and that would of course impact on the fundamental democratic rights that people should have."

Mr Wilson said the bill would be 'not conducive to a democratic and free society' and hopes more than 250 Chichester residents will join him in opposing the bill tomorrow.
