Gemma Green, a funeral arranger at F. A. Holland Funeralcare in New Parade, made the plea after she heard about a hospital in London which has been placing knitted hearts in the hands of family members who are not permitted to visit their loved ones.

Gemma said: “We’ve already been inundated with help from the community; a real show of strength and solidarity through this difficult period.

“Each family is to receive two hearts: one for the family to keep at home and one to stay with their lost loved one in their final resting place.

“This way, families will always have a piece of their loved one’s hearts with them, no matter where they go.

“Losing a loved one is never easy, but with the new social distancing rules that we are required to adhere to at funerals, the grieving process can be even more difficult for families, especially those who might not be able to say goodbye in the way they had hoped.

“Therefore, it is vital to ensure they feel part of their loved one’s funeral, even if they can’t physically attend.”
