Sophie Badman, 28, from Littlehampton has been painting stones with positive messages and the Samaritans phone number, and placing them around the area, including Worthing beach, the Angmering Estate and Arundel.

Patrick Woodward, Worthing Samaritans’ publicity officer, said: “This is a lovely initiative to provide some comfort and hope to people at a difficult time. Worthing Samaritans’ volunteers have continued to provide an amazing service over the past 50 years and throughout the pandemic.

“We are always here for people when they need us.”

Sophie started the project to brighten people’s day by leaving ‘positive pebbles’ for them to find.

She said: “Painted stones with positive messages have become quite common during the lockdown and I wanted to raise awareness of how Samaritans is a huge support to so many people at this time.

“It’s exciting when people notice them around the town and are encouraged by them. Every pebble also has the Samaritans contact details, so people can get in touch if they need us.”

The pebbles have gained interest on social media, as people find them and post pictures of their messages of hope during what is, for many, a difficult time.
