Resident speaks after Chichester canal crash

A Chichester resident has said what he saw on the night two people were taken to hospital after their car went into Chichester canal.

South Bank resident Keith Arnold said it was difficult to see what was going on outside on the night (Sunday January 26).

Mr Arnold said he had 'absolutely no idea' what was happening outside but saw two people who appeared 'shocked and bedraggled' with the emergency services.

He said: "There were lots of people in the dark and it was pouring with rain. I came down late as I was upstairs doing something else.

"I thought I could hear my wife talking to someone outside so I came down stairs and lots of blue flashing lights.

"They looked very wet and shocked, but then everyone looked very wet."

Paramedics and an ambulance also attended the scene and one women and another person were rescued from the water.

They were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to St Richard's Hospital.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "I can confirm we were called to reports of a car in the water at South Bank, Chichester, at approximately 5.50pm yesterday (Sunday 26 January). Ambulance crews attended the scene.

"Two people, who were rescued from the water, were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester for further checks. They were not thought to have serious injuries."
