Thousands attend Brighton Black Lives Matter protest - in pictures

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Brighton to join a Black Lives Matter protest.

These pictures show the crowd as people supported the movement. James Butler, 28, from Marmion Road, Hove, was at the rally. He said: “It was amazing to see so many people come out in support of this cause. The idea that it isn’t enough to be non-racist, but actively anti-racist, really resonated with me, and that’s why I felt it was important to act now. The atmosphere was peaceful and the vast majority of us were wearing masks. Also, being part of the LGBT+ community, the rights I have now are in part because of black, trans women taking action in the Stonewall riots. This is a small way I can repay the debt I owe to them.” Deshé Gully, 26, added: “Towards the beginning of the rally there was a child holding a sign that read ‘black kids matter’ and all I could think was how unfortunate is it that this kid lives in a world where he has to defend his right to exist. Tons of people held signs advocating for change. This rally truly was proof that the world is ready for it.”
