Preferred contractors have been appointed to build Petworth’s long awaited skate park after fresh hope that stalled plans may be back on track.
At a full meeting of the council project leader Roger Hanauer told fellow members the working group had gone through an approved process and chosen Wheelscape.
Town councillors voted in favour of making the company their preferred contractor.
The move comes after a behind closed doors meeting with Chichester District Council cabinet member Gillian Keegan who has pledged to find space for the skate park in one of the car parks.
The meeting came after a bitter row erupted when plans for the skate park in the Sylvia Beaufoy Youth Centre car park which had been in the pipeline for more than a decade were turned down by CDC against their officers’ recommendations on health and safety grounds.
Town councillors launched a strong campaign against the ‘no’ decision and now say they believe there is a new spirit of cooperation to work in partnership and identity a suitable site.
Mr Hanauer said surrounding parishes were supporting the plans with letters imploring CDC to find a suitable site. Further funding may be available from Sport England.
