The Co-op supermarket in Petworth to still going ahead with plans to move over the road from its present home.
That was the message given by Co-op representatives when they met members of the town council. The meeting took place after the supermarket was accused of ‘shop blocking’ by town council chairman Chris Kemp and damaging the town’s economy by leaving a prime retail space empty for nearly three years.
The Co-op has a lease on the former antiques shop Swan House in Market Square and says it is planning to move. But plans to alter the premises were refused in 2014 and revised plans have not yet been approved.
Chairman of the planning committee Rob Evans told fellow councillors he had been assured the Co-op had ‘every intention’ of moving and was in the final stages of sorting out a listed building planning application.
