Petworth to go to the polls in town election

IT has proved a struggle to find candidates for town and parish council elections in the past and 2015 is a similar story.

Of the 48 towns and parishes there will be elections in only 13.

At Petworth, dogged by controversy since the resignation of the former clerk Jean Huggett and town council chairman Ken Lintill last year, voters will see a town council election for the first time in almost two decades.

There are 16 candidates for the 15 seats. Missing from the nomination list are sitting councillors Carol Goldthorpe, John Robbins, Richard Chandler, Joan Devine and Rawden Rogerson.

There are seven new candidates seeking election.

All four wards on Chichester City Council are to be contested with five seats up for grabs in each ward.

Elsewhere there will be elections at Bury Parish Council, Chidham and Hambrook, Compton, Rogate, Selsey and Sidlesham, Milland and Heyshott.

There will not be an election at Midhurst where there are only 13 nominations for the 15 seats.

The town council is losing veteran Ted Dummer, now 84, who joined the council in 1976 as well as Judy Fowler, Colin Hughes and Wynn Passmore.
