IN PICTURES: Birdman flier soars more than 100m

Leading the pack at the end of day one yesterday (August 15) was Condor-class regular Tony Hughes, who travelled 106.5m in 11.9 seconds off Worthing Pier.

Flying for Wiltshire Air Ambulance , Tony had already been labelled a ‘star flyer’ in the programme for going more than 100m last year.

The Condor class is for the modified hang gliders or similar craft with a wing span less than 35ft and hot on Tony’s heels was Kevin Smith who managed 94.4m, staying in the air for longer than Tony though at 12.3 seconds.

Last year’s winner Ron Freeman is in third place travelling a disappointing 59.9m by his own high standards. He took the £10,000 jackpot last year with a distance of 159m.

In fourth place was Edgar Scukins, who came down from Clapham to take part, and flew 18.3m in 4.3 seconds.

Meanwhile in the Leonardo da Vinci class, for more innovative flying craft, the leader overnight is Sean Frawley at 87.6m . He travelled all the way from Hong Kong to take part.

Tony Hughes travelled more than 100m to take the lead in the Condor class, with tough competition again lined up for day two, which starts at 12.45pm today (August 16).
