PICTURES: Passers by rescue unconscious man from River Arun

AN unconscious man was dragged from the River Arun by passers by this evening (Wednesday, May 6).

He had fell from the Littlehampton Swing Bridge, just before 6pm, and two others, who had gone in after him, had to be rescued by the Solent Coastguard.

A spokeswoman for Solent Coastguard said: "We have no information how or why the man was in the water, as yet.

"We were called to the scene by ambulance crews, who told us that one man had been pulled from the river unconscious, and that two others were clinging to a pontoon."

She added that the man had been taken to Worthing Hospital by the coastguard helicopter, and that the two others, who were rescued by lifeboat crews, were being treated at the scene, one for hypothermia, by paramedics.

Littlehampton coastguard rescue teams, lifeboats, police and fire crews were also called to the bridge, by the Arun View pub.

The swing bridge was closed by police.
