Police committed to Operation Triangle

AN EAST Sussex police operation aimed at reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured(KSI)on the roads is proving to be a success.

Launched in May, East Sussex Road Policing Unit's Operation Triangle's aim is to 'enforce, engage and educate' and there have been daily initiatives across the district, which has a disproportionately high number of KSIs compared to other areas in Sussex.

To date, eleven cars have been seized from their owners for driving uninsured or unlicensed, and 14 200 fixed penalty notices (FPN) have been issued for driving without insurance, which also carry a six point penalty, half way towards a driving ban.

Inspector Steve Grace said: "We are committed to reducing KSIs in East Sussex. We are using marked and unmarked vehicles to target those who think they are above the law and anyone using the roads illegally can expect to be caught and dealt with."

"We are aiming this message not only at road users, but also their relatives and friends. Drive sensibly and legally and we won't bother you, but drive drunk, at speed, without insurance, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone or just anti-socially generally and you'll be seeing our blue lights flashing in your rear view mirror."

Police are working closely with the East Sussex Casualty Steering Group and the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and the operation is supported by East Sussex County Council.

Inspector Grace added:"While there are times when an accident is just about unavoidable - such as the motorcyclist seriously injured in a collision with a deer recently - there's a lot that people can do to look after themselves and others on the road.

"Be aware that you are driving on rural roads where there may be an unseen hazard around the next bend, take extra care after summer rain on roads that become slippery after a period of dry weather.

"Our figures, which also include 161 enforceable FPNs and 52 FPNS, show that while the vast majority of road users are law-abiding, there is still a percentage who drive inconsiderately, flout legislation and endanger other road users. We will take action against these drivers to make the roads of Sussex safer for all."
