Penny Morris is appealing for witnesses to come forward who saw the horrendous scene in Tangmere Road, next to the One Stop shop, around 5pm on August 10.

Ollie, the five-year-old dachsund, has since had to be put down.

“It was horrible. I still don’t sleep properly at night,” said Mrs Morris, who still has flashbacks.

She was walking with her 14-year-old son Tom and their four dachshunds when they passed a van parked in the layby with the window half open.

Mrs Morris said a boxer-type dog waiting in the van spotted the family as they passed.

“The dog squeezed its way through, came across the road and grabbed hold of my smallest dog by his back and shook him,” she said.

“It never released Ollie at all. I was too scared to whack the dog at all.”

They all ran into the shop shouting for help and Mrs Morris said the owner emerged and Ollie was released.

She is appealing for anyone who saw what happened to come forward.

“There was one man who witnessed it,” she said. “There was a boy who I would like to come forward, he was about 14 or 15 on a bike.”

She said her other three dogs, two aged three and one aged five, were ‘really shaken up’.

“The first couple of days they hid under the sofa,” she said.

A police spokesman said: “A woman and her teenage son were out with their four dogs, all dachshunds, around 5pm on Monday, August 10, outside the One Stop shop on Tangmere Road when one of the dogs was attacked by another dog which had been in van and got out through a window.

“The dachshund, which was attacked, suffered severe injuries and sadly had to be put down.

“The dog and dog owner have been identified and spoken to and officers are working on the investigation to establish the most appropriate action.”

She said anyone who saw what happened should email [email protected] quoting serial 1241 of 10/08.
