Chichester Greyfriars Housing Association (CGHA) said work had commenced at its site in Royal Close to build the homes, which will be ready for occupation, by people aged 60 and over, in the summer of 2021.

David Parfitt, chairman of the association, said: “There is a desperate need for this sort of affordable housing in Chichester which this development will help to address.”

The cost of the development is £1.5 million – with £0.2 million being provided by Chichester District Council and £0.6 million by Homes England.

The remaining £0.8m will be funded by the Association from its own resources.

A ceremony to mark the start of the building work was attended by councillor Eileen Lintill, Leader of the Chichester District Council, councillor Polly Gaskin of the Chichester City Council, Mr Parfitt and Julia Potter, Managing Director, of the housing association.

Mrs Lintill said: “As part of Chichester District Council’s Housing Strategy we are committed to supporting the development of 1,000 affordable homes for local people by 2025 as well as reducing rough sleeping in our district.

“We work very closely with several charities and housing organisations in the district to ensure that residents receive the right support and that people on low incomes have access to good quality and affordable housing.

“We are delighted to be able to support this development by the Chichester Greyfriars Housing Association.

“These homes will meet a strong need in the city and we are pleased to be able to help mark the official start of work on site.”

Chichester Greyfriars Housing Association (CGHA) has been operating solely in the Chichester area for over 50 years, providing good quality, affordable, housing for people aged 60 and over and in need of a home.
