FREE parking in coastal car parks could be scrapped.

Chichester District Council cabinet members are set to debate changes to parking charges at their meeting
next week.

Under the proposals, which still have to go before full council if approved by cabinet, both the Selsey East Street and East Wittering Northern Crescent car parks would lose their one hour of free parking. It would be replaced with a 20p charge for up to two hours.

The proposals would also see business season tickets replaced with general season tickets for a £10 charge in the West Wittering Marine
Drive car park.

Both Midhurst and Petworth will keep the hour
of free parking, but subsequent charges will increase by 20p per hour.

Other changes include increasing season ticket and parking charges in city-centre car parks. If approved, officers believe the changes will raise an extra £90,000 per year for the council.

“Any increase in charges could cause people to park within neighbouring residential areas,” said parking services manager Tania Murphy in her report to cabinet.

However, she added the ‘modest’ nature of the increases would ‘minimise’ the risk.
