Following a bout of antisocial behaviour in the car park, Midhurst Town Council resolved to install a gate to keep vehicles out overnight, but with the new skatepark proving a popular attraction, visitors took to parking along the grass verge causing some upset to residents.

Following a meeting of the community and environment committee on Monday (April 12), committee chairman Mark Purves said: “There was a lot of conversation around the skatepark.

“We had a number of residents make representations regarding concerns about traffic on Carron Lane, and the fact that we are now operating a gate to the car park on Carron Lane in response to a rise in anti-social behaviour with people using it for inappropriate activities.”

After installing the gate and locking it after hours, people visiting the skatepark began parking on the grass verge on Carron Lane causing damage to the grass.

Cllr Purves added: “We are keeping the gate but we are not going to be actively operating it and will use the gate where necessary in response to anti-social behaviour.

“There has been quite a bit of damage to the verges and residents have taken it upon themselves to put cut logs along the verge to stop people from parking there.

“We have also contacted Highways about safety measures along Carron Lane.”
