The fine for littering in the Horsham district is to be doubled from £75 to £150.

The increase – the maximum allowed under the law – was agreed by members of the district council’s cabinet.

News of the decision was shared during a meeting of the full council on Wednesday (December 14).

Toni Bradnum, cabinet member for recycling and waste, said: “Litter is a real blight on the whole country and I think anything we can do to discourage this ‘lob it out of the window’ attitude is to be welcomed.”

Anyone caught littering will have their fine reduced by £40 if they pay up within 14 days.

Mrs Bradnum added: “Some may think that’s quite a high figure but I think it’s a bit like getting a parking ticket or a speeding fine – it’s self-inflicted pain.”

She thanked members of the public who put in the time and effort to support the council’s street cleaning services by clearing up roadside litter.
