The 1.1km spine road, which will link the A272 with the A29 on the eastern side of the village, is now part of the West Sussex highway network.

It has been built by a consortium of Devine Homes, Bellway Homes and Persimmon Homes and runs through their new large-scale housing development.

Roger Elkins, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “This is a welcome addition to the highway network and I would like to thank the developers for providing this new infrastructure, which will no doubt reduce through traffic in Billingshurst village centre, help to improve air quality and enhance village life.”

Amanda Jupp, Billingshurst’s county councillor, added: “I welcome the opening of the new spine road.

“It will help reduce the volume of traffic through the village as well as enable road users to by-pass the village more efficiently if they are coming from the north on the A29 and proceeding eastwards on the A272 as it will take pressure away from the junction of East Street and the High Street.”

The spine road will be designated part of the A272. East Street, West Street and part of the High Street - that were part of the A272 - will be downgraded to C-class roads.
