The party became the official opposition to the Tories at West Sussex County Council back in May 2013, taking ten seats.

With just over a year until the next elections Sandra James has replaced Mike Glennon, who stood as a UKIP candidate in last year’s general election, finishing third as East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton was re-elected.

Ms James, who represents the Bourne division, said: “Mike has led the UKIP group excellently over a period of three years where the group has been instrumental in: scrutinising and challenging decisions affecting the running and performance at WSCC, promoting alternative approaches such as unitary status for this council, securing the universally agreed motion at council that supports a guaranteed interview scheme for veterans, together with many other areas of work.

“Mike will continue to employ his astuteness and quick mindedness as part of the UKIP group as we continue our role as the main opposition at WSCC.

“UKIP will continue to offer an alternative vision for this county and country with our manifesto being the only one that received independent auditing and which was supported by four million voters at the 2015 general election.

“It is not only the EU debate but a whole plethora of policy decisions which affect this country and county with UKIP councillors willing to stand up for what people believe in.

“There is of course the plethora of May elections within West Sussex (PCC, borough and district) and of course the referendum in June - much to do and I know Mike will continue to be instrumental within the UKIP group with this energy, enormous intellect and commitment.”

She explained that a leadership change had been planned for some time and reflected the work Mr Glennon was doing nationally for UKIP combined with his work as a West Sussex county councillor.
