It was formed in 1995 and is one of five ‘Premier League’ associations in the country.

Not only has the association maintained its place in the Premier League, it has climbed to the third highest contributing association, helped by an increase in membership last year and savings made to expenditure.

As a Premier League association it raises money locally to help the Conservative Party’s campaigning across the country.

In a letter to the association chairman Mr Cameron said: “This is a magnificent achievement and I congratulate your committee and each and every one of your members who helped and worked so steadfastly and conscientiously over the years to make this possible.

“The contribution made by Arundel and South Downs Conservative Association is a fine inspiration and example, and I am grateful for all your efforts.”

Nick Herbert, Arundel and South Downs MP, said that he was delighted that the hard work of local Conservative Party members had been acknowledged, and added: “It’s a fantastic achievement and a great honour for our officers to have been thanked personally by the Prime Minister.

“Our activists work hard with fundraising events throughout the year and I’m so pleased that their efforts over such a long period have been recognised.”
