Residents urged to be '˜champions in recycling'

West Sussex residents are being urged to become '˜champions in recycling' during a packed summer of sport.

With so many people glued to the TV or enjoying picnics or barbecues, West Sussex County Council is reminded people what can be recycled.

Items include:

• Cans (beer and fizzy drinks)

• Bottles (beer, wine, water, squash and spirits)

• Pringles tubes and lids

• Clean takeaway plastic tubs

• Clean pizza boxes

• Ice cream tubs

• Strawberry punnets

• Kitchen foil

David Barling, WSCC’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “It’s not often that there are three major sporting events on, one after the other.

“As you enjoy them with family and friends, remember that a lot of your food containers can be recycled – be it a can, tin, carton, bottle or a plastic tub, pot or tray.”

More than 100 tonnes of aluminium cans were recycled in July 2015, but throughout the year 636 tonnes were thrown in the bin.

Mr Barling added: “Landfill costs for aluminium cans and glass bottles cost the council more than £120,000 last year, which especially in a time of austerity is money that could have been better used for other purposes.

“Please remember that if it is clean, dry and loose, that it can be recycled.”
