Polo club hopes to build new area

PLANS for an equestrian area in Midhurst will be decided by the South Downs National Park Authority.

The proposals, for Brackenwood Polo at Telegraph Hill, include the change of use of a 6.2-hectare site to mixed use including installing a barn, timber stables, temporary stabling and a pony wash-down area. There would also be hard-surfaced areas for parking and access and pony tethering and an exercise track.

Brackenwood Polo employs ten people, including a polo manager, ground staff and trainers.

The facilities would be used for training polo ponies.

The plans said the use of the site was important to the economy of the area.

Giving the reasons for its direction, the national park’s director of planning Tim Slaney said: “The site is located within a remote rural location and lies adjacent to a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI), common land and a public right of way.

“It may consequently be significant in terms of its implications for the South Downs National Park.”
