£20,000 raid on shop

RAIDERS spent hours clearing some £20,000 of stock after smashing their way into a Devonshire Road clothes shop.

It's the second time Gekko surf and skate shop in Regency Arcade has been hit by major robberies in just nine months and devastated owners say they must now close indefinitely.

Jenny Cunliffe and her partners beefed up security with 900 metal shutters after thieves got away with 8,000 of stock during a raid last November.

But that counted for little overnight last Wednesday. Robbers smashed a window and made light work of the shutters after unsuccessfully trying to jemmy the door.

They then covered one CCTV camera and destroyed another before stripping the shelves and store room bear of the popular surfwear - the shop's entire summer stock.

Regency Arcade is enclosed and it is unclear how the thieves made entry, but Jenny suspects they may have come in during business hours and propped open a fire escape, which opens onto Eversley Road.
