Rare dragonfly is sighted in Arundel

A RARE dragonfly which breeds on just five UK rivers has been spotted a second time in three years at the Arundel Wetland Centre, suggesting it is breeding there.

Warden Paul Stevens took this photograph of the club-tailed dragonfly on the reserve on Sunday.

David Chelmick, president of the British Dragonfly Society and Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, said: “I believe the club-tailed dragonfly is breeding at the WWT Arundel Wetland Centre.

“Their life cycle is two to three years, from egg to adult, which is likely why the sightings are three years apart.”

From the WWT photo, he verified the dragonfly was a mature male, likely to be on ‘territory’ and looking to mate.
