Organisers said it was a truly joyous occasion, attended by 60 parishioners, which demonstrated the loyalty and support for the church.

The last survey of the church fabric, which takes place every five years, pointed out that the south porch’s roof included asbestos and the old wood was beginning to wear.

Fundraising by the Friends of St Peter’s, principally at a special St Peter’s Day evensong, produced the funds to remove the asbestos and replaster the roof in traditional lath and plaster, as well as replacing the old wood with new seasoned oak that will last well into the next century.

The electrification of the clock was paid for by the Raggett family, who now live in Yorkshire but lived in the village for many years, and Craig Hooker, whose late husband John had wound the clock weekly by hand, having climbed up into the tower.

Paul Belcher, a member of the PCC who lives near the church, said he was delighted that after four years, the church bell was again striking the hour 24 times a day.
