Remembrance brings out Lewes crowds

LARGE crowds were in Lewes town centre to witness Remembrance Sunday parades and observances.

At 11am the two minutes silence was observed at the War Memorial with a maroon fired both before and after the period of respect for the dead of two world wars and other conflicts.

Standard bearers of the Cliffe Royal British Legion, and its women s section, were in attendance, as were those of the Royal Artillery, the Royal Air Force Association and the Royal Naval Association. The Exhortation was carried out by Cliffe RBL president Jim Franks.

At 2.30pm the organisations paraded through the High Street to the War Memorial led by the Brighton Silver Band and with the Barcombe Scout and Guide Band at the rear. Parade Commander was Squadron Leader Jack Stabler.

Also in attendance were Barcombe and Ringmer RBL representatives, and those from St John Ambulance and Scouts and Guides. Sentry duty was carried out by Royal Naval Cadets and a contingent of Air Training Cadets from Newhaven was also present.

The short outdoor service was conducted by Cliffe RBL chaplain the Rev Robert Bell. After a march past the Town Hall in front of members of Lewes Town Council, the procession proceeded to St John-sub-Castro where a service was conducted by the Rev Martin Sully, assisted by the Rev Peter Markby and Father Eric Flood.
