Reporters of the future quiz mayor

THE Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Battle met reporters from the Claverham Community College newspaper, the Claverham Chronicle, last week.

Some searching questions were asked and the cub reporters gained a lot of information about the roles of the officials and a new insight into how a local town council works.

Mayor Richard Bye revealed that he considers his role to be an honour but that it does demand a lot of time and attention, especially attending meetings and reading council paperwork.

Cllr Sylvie Pry, deputy mayor, told Year 8 pupil Toby that she liked that she got to meet people from many walks of life and to feel that she was making a difference to her area.

Toby, a member of the Youth Parliament, had met the mayor earlier that week as he had been on the judging panel for the Battle Scarecrow Festival.

Cllr Bye told Year 10 pupil Poppy that he particularly liked her question about the chain of office as it had given him the chance to find out more about his mayoral chain and its history.

The reporting team’s story will be published in the Claverham Chronicle next week.
