Return of the Zapcats

BY land and by sea, Littlehampton faces an invasion of power at the town's annual Regatta early next month.

Organisers are looking forward to a bumper entry of 60 Zapcats, the miniature powerboats which made a highly successful first appearance at last year's event.

There will be a further 13 two-litre powerboats competing in national races at speeds up to 80 miles per hour, the first time the regatta has staged championship racing at this level.

And on dry land, around 150 classic American Gold Wing and Harley Davidson motorcycles will make a stunning display on The Green.

As well as the tens of thousands expected to watch from Littlehampton's seafront and riverside, many more will be enjoying Sky Sports and Channel 5 television coverage of the event, which takes place on August 2 and 3.

The regatta's new chairman, Terry Mills, is looking forward to his first event at the helm, having taken over when stalwarts Mike Northeast and Mark Butler stood down six months ago.

And he will have much more than a spectator's interest in the powerboat racing '” as the current national two-litre powerboat champion he will be going all-out to defend his title on home territory.

So successful was the Zapcat racing last year, the competition has been extended to cover both days of the regatta, providing a thrilling spectacle just yards off the beach.

lNext week's Gazette will carry a full preview of the regatta.
