The first stage of work on Midhurst U3A’s first world war project tracing names on war memorials across the Midhurst and Petworth area is almost complete and the website featuring all the research is now live.

It has gone online in time for nationwide commemorations of the 100th-anniversary of the start of the war today, August 4.

As well as this central place of reference the various teams will be presenting their research in their own communities.

The website is full of information, user friendly and easy to navigate.

The welcome page outlines the project and invites you to explore the results of the research.

There are details of the memorials at Bepton, Cocking, Heyshott, Iping and Chithurst, Lodsworth, Midhurst, Petworth, Rogate, Selham, Stedham, Trotton and West Lavington, together with the casualties listed on each.

Members of U3A are hoping more facts will emerge and the team would be very pleased to hear from anyone with information to give or questions to ask.

Just click on ‘Contact Us’ and leave a message.

The project’s website, will be continually updated.

The work is not yet finished and there are other memorials to research.

It is hoped this will be completed and presented by the anniversary of the Armistice.
