Search for May Queen begins in Fernhurst

THE search has begun in Fernhurst for a new May queen who will take centre stage at the village’s Revels on May 17.

Traditionally the May queen chosen earlier in the year leads the procession to the recreation ground where she is crowned before officially opening the Revels.

The event is almost a century old and several past May queens come back year after year to relive their day.

All girls aged between ten and 16 who live in the parish can apply to be May queen and in addition, attendants will be needed for both the new queen, to be chosen this spring, and last year’s queen, Rose Buchanan.

Anyone who would like to be considered for May queen should contact the organisers on

Early in March, all the candidates will meet for tea in the Fernhurst Centre and talk to some of the judges who will have to make a decision.

The prospective queen and her attendants have several rehearsals of the coronation ceremony, so they are word perfect for the big day at the recreation ground.

During the course of the year, the queen’s duties in the village will include some prize-giving, switching on the Christmas lights and starting the pancake races.
