Second prison planned for Ford?

A LEAKED memo suggesting a new category C prison for up to 720 inmates could be built at Ford has sent shockwaves through the local community.

The staff briefing, which was leaked to the Sunday Times, revealed the prison's governor Fiona Radford suggested that Ford could take on more prisoners and would be a suitable site for a new prison to be built alongside the existing open prison.

Nearby residents, Arun councillors and Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert have reacted angrily to the news and many have objected to the suggestions.

But the prison's deputy governor Glyn Hughes told the Gazette that the leaked briefing, which was sent out to staff on August 3, had been "blown out of all proportion and taken out of context".
