Selham sloe gins in stand-off

A 20 per cent increase in entrants for the annual sloe gin competition at the Three Moles pub, Selham, had the three judges licking their lips.

Jo Oomen from SuJoCo Cookery School at Lodsworth, Christopher Wigdor, last year’s winner, and Chris Woods had 31 entries to sample, each contained in a small, numbered glass.

The 31 were reduced to 15 for a second round and these went down to five for the final round.

The winner was Kees Oomen of Selham who was, unfortunately, not present to accept the victor’s wooden plate which had been carved by Peter West from East Dean.

Runner-up was John Turner from Fernhurst and Derek Wootton from Northchapel was third.

Sylvia and Paul Tadhunter, publicans at the Three Moles, said some entries came from as far away at Oxford and Salcombe in Devon.
