It means the town is set to remain one of the only places in the South East where people cannot do a supermarket shop on a Sunday.

A four-year stalemate finally came to an end with Sainsburys and Tesco offering to sell each other their land but both saying it was no longer viable for them to open a store in the town.

A Rother survey put a new supermarket high on a list of local priorities claiming that 80 percent of residents regularly did their big weekly shop outside of Rye.
