Shingle to be replaced to give protection to Pagham's beach

Tidal erosion wrecked the former seating area in front of Pagham Yacht Club

Arun District Council is to start preparing today for the coast protection work to begin next week.

Its contractor, Earlcote Construction, will be on site around the Pagham Yacht Club frontage and East Front Road. The work, which is being funded by the Environment Agency, is due to last about two weeks.

Cllr Terence Chapman, Arun’s cabinet member for environmental services, said: “We apologise in advance for any disturbance this may cause.

“But we hope residents will appreciate the benefits of getting this work done as soon as possible.

“We are aware of the vegetated shingle habitat and we would like to assure anybody concerned about disturbance that machinery will be kept away from these sensitive areas.”

About 10,000 cubic metres of shingle will be taken from the eastern end of the Church Norton Spit, where it is covered by water at high tide, and transported in dump trucks to the beach.

The contractor will start early today to form a track across the channel at extreme low water but disturbance will be kept to a minimum after this initial work.
