Shopper in Bognor Regis sees red after buying out-of-date tomatoes at Tesco

A Tesco shopper is seeing red about a packet of out-of-date tomatoes she bought in the firm's Bognor Regis store.

Helen Beales purchased the snack pack of four cherry tomatoes for 49p on Monday.

The pack had a display-until date of August 12 and should have been eaten by August 14.

She claims it is the fourth time in a month she has found the same product on the shelves of the Shripney Road store after it should have been thrown away.

"I can see the dates clearly but an older person might not be able to," she said, "and become ill through eating the tomatoes.

"It shows really bad stock management that Tesco has allowed this to happen so often."

A company spokeswoman said: 'We would like to apologise to Mrs Beales and a full reimbursement and gesture of goodwill from the store will be given if the goods and receipt are provided.

"We are, of course, concerned to hear about this. We have strict procedures to prevent this from happening which seem to have gone awry on this occasion for which we are sorry. The store is looking into this to ensure it will not happen again."

Mrs Beales, of Pound Road, came across her first outdated pack of tomatoes in the middle of July.

Another two followed in the next few weeks. She took them to the customer services desk.

"The staff apologised to me and said they would make sure it didn't happen again," she said. "But they obviously keep overlooking these tomatoes." She decided to buy the fourth packet of old tomatoes to highlight the problem.
