South East MEPs react to news of Brussels explosions: '˜just awful, awful news'

The South East's MEPs have reacted with horror to news breaking this morning that explosions have ripped through an airport and tube station in Brussels '“ home to the European Parliament.

Richard Ashworth (Conservative) tweeted, “My thoughts and prayers with all the victims of today’s terror attacks senseless loss of life, we must all unite to fight terror #Brussels.”

Catherine Bearder (Lib Dem) said she heard the tragic news as she was preparing to vote in the environment committee. “Thoughts go to all victims and those who rush to help them,” she tweeted.

She added later, “My team and I are safe but feeling shaken after the horrific events in Brussels this morning.

“My heart goes out to all the victims of these cowardly attacks and their loved ones, as well as all those who rushed to help them.

“In these difficult times, the UK must stand in solidarity with Belgium and offer any assistance we can.”

UKIP’s Nigel Farage tweeted, “I’m very upset by events in Brussels today and even more depressed for the future.”

Janice Atkinson (Europe of Nations and Freedom) said she had just been turned back from Eurostar, adding. “My staff are all well, one came thro Malbeek 10 mins before blast relief.”

Labour’s Annaliese Dodds tweeted her thanks for the ‘kind messages’ she had received. She added, “I’m fine as are my staff. Just awful, awful news.”
