A special Mother's Day celebration at Pendean care home in West Lavington

At Bupa's Pendean care home there are special Mothering Sunday celebrations today (Sunday, March 26) where Penny Nichols, 53 years old, is a housekeeper and together with her daughter Emma West, 25 years, and son James, 23 years, they offer around the clock support for residents.

The trio has been working together for six years and share almost 25 years of experience at the home.

Penny was inspired by her daughter and son to join the caring profession six years ago.

Bupa housekeeping assistant Emma said: “I initially joined ten years ago to earn money to go on a charity trip to Botswana and Tanzania to help decorate an orphanage. Since then my brother and mum have joined. We work so well together, it doesn’t cross my mind that I’m actually working with my family.”

Penny added: “Working in a care home it feels like you work in one big, happy family and in our case, it actually is. I am glad I joined the care home with my children. It makes me feel proud and privileged to see the great relationships they have with the residents, a side which many mothers who don’t work with their kids wouldn’t see.”

Jackie Travers, home manager at Pendean House said: “The close ties between Penny, James and Emma bring a family atmosphere to the home.

“They remind residents how important families are and their own connections. Mother’s Day is a big event in our home – we’ll be celebrating with lots of flowers and our residents’ family and friends.”
