Specials give awards and ask for coaches

AN APPEAL for more coaches was the first order of business for the new chairman of the 1066 Specials.

Colin Taylor took the helm of the charity football club at its annual meeting at Bexhill College on Saturday.

The club allows youngsters and adults with special needs to play football in a team environment.

And Colin asked for more people to volunteer and the club continues to expand.

The meeting also saw shirts handed out to new 1066 Specials players and medals handed out to all those who have played for the club.

Jonathan Haddock received the Paul Borthwick Trophy for his coaching efforts.

Guest of honour, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex Mrs Phylidda Stewart '“ Roberts, handed out the prizes.

The club received cheques from Bexhill Rotary Club and 1066 Sporting Club.

Colin said: "It is a great honour to be chairman. This club is very important and we can go forward with volunteers, coaches, the committee, families and players."

Outgoing chairman Mike Costello said: "We have had a very interesting year, with lots of new members. We have had quite few matches, some good and some not so good, and we have mad friends on and off the pitch.

"We have had a lot of help from local businesses and volunteers and have achieved charitable status which is quite a feather in our cap."

All of our players have met challenges and have achieved," said chairman of the trustees Harold Lawrence. "And that is what this club is all about '“ smiling faces just like our badge.

He added the club were on the look out for their own hall and pitches.

"We hope in 12 months when we meet here again we will have something positive to tell you all '“ watch this space!"
