Speed camera on A259

A new speed camera is to be installed along the A259 in North Bersted.

Work by the Sussex Safety Camera Partnership on the device to catch law-breaking motorists will begin tomorrow. This will see the fixed camera housing put in place.

Further work needs to take place before the camera becomes operational. This is likely to be at the beginning of April.

The camera is being put in close to the Regis Service Station and Brazwick Avenue as the A259 Chichester Road enters the built-up outskirts of North Bersted from the north.

This area saw 12 injury crashes, including three that led to a death or serious injury, on a 500m stretch of the road during a three-year period.

Recent round-the-clock speed monitoring revealed that three out of four '“ 74 per cent '“ of drivers were travelling above the 30mph speed limit at the camera site.

Emma Rogers, the partnership's communications manager, said: 'We are confident this camera will have the desired effect of reducing serious injury accidents and vehicle speeds on this busy road.

'The camera is bright yellow and there are several warning signs beforehand, in addition to the rumble strips across the road as vehicles enter the 30mph zone.

'This section of road is vulnerable, with a junction, bus stop and petrol station nearby. Our data shows that drivers are not slowing down enough when they approach these potential hazards.'

She added that speed continued to play a large part in the death toll on Sussex roads of a person dying every 3.5 days.

'Drivers must learn to travel at appropriate speeds,' she said. 'If they ignore all the camera warning signs, enforcement is the only answer. The onus is on every driver to lift their right foot.'

Being flashed by the new camera will cost drivers a 60 fine and three penalty points on their driving licence.

The Chichester Road camera will be the second on the Bognor Regis area road network. The first was installed on the A29 Shripney Road.

The Sussex Safety Camera Partnership consists of East and West Sussex county councils, Brighton and Hove City Council, Sussex Police, HM Courts' Service and the Highways Agency.
