Sporting bonanza for Arun pupils

DREARY weather and “torrential” conditions certainly couldn’t stop young athletes from having fun in Littlehampton.

Hundreds of primary school children from Littlehampton, Rustington, Arundel, Climping and Lyminster took part in their own mini Olympics to herald the start of the Olympic Games on Friday (July 27).

The spectacle was held at The Littlehampton Academy, last week, and featured a whole host of sporting events, with each school representing a different country.

The morning began with a torch relay around the school’s field.

At the competition there was a range traditional Olympic sports like tennis, basketball and hockey to some more unusual events which included speed stacking – where children had to stack up a set number of plastic cups in the quickest time – and boccia.

Sara Hopkins, community liaison manager for the academy said: “The children loved it, even when they were playing hockey in the torrential rain. The atmosphere was superb and the Olympic values truly in evidence.”
