Even the taxi drivers who pick up from the station said how much they would miss Pete.

During his time at Battle Pete raised around £12,000 for charity, including collecting funds for a railway orphanage and a nursing home for railway workers.

He raised the money by adorning the booking hall with attractive Christmas decorations.

Pete has seen many changes, including the electriciation of the line, privatisation and the end of slam-door trains.

A colleague of Pete’s commented: “People will miss him immensely.

“He has taken all the questions and queries in his stride and done all that he could to solve them and help people.

“He is going to be very sorely missed but we all wish him all the very best.”
